

There have been The Lion King productions in Los Angeles, London, Tokyo, Toronto, Sydney, Shanghai, Paris, Las Vegas, Singapore, Madrid, and Mexico City, just to name a few. This number doesn’t even include the numerous other productions of the show that were shown off Broadway. The Lion King also holds Broadway’s record for the highest grossing production of all time, grossing over $1 billion. The Lion King is Broadway’s third longest running show, only behind The Phantom of the Opera and Chicago. In 2006 the show moved residency to the Minskoff Theatre where it has been playing ever since. The official opening night was on November 13 at the New Amsterdam Theatre. Previews on the Broadway stage began shortly after on October 15, 1997. Opening night was on Jat the Orpheum Theatre.

The musical originally debuted in Minneapolis before hitting the Broadway stage. The book for the show is by Roger Allers and Irene Mecchi and the show is produced by Disney Theatrical Productions.

The music for the show is by Elton John, lyrics by Tim Rice, and musical score created by Hans Zimmer. Based on the 1994 Disney animated film of the same name, the theatre adaptation has won the hearts of kids and adults across the world. The Lion King musical is one of the most successful shows to ever hit the Broadway stage.
